Description

The term Chitosan indicates various polymers (it would be more correct to speak about Chitosans) with a molecular weight ranging from 50 to 200 Kda, different viscosity and different degree of deacetylation. The chemical formula that identifies these substances is (C6H11O4N) n.

Chitosan is obtained by treating Chitin, generally obtained from the exoskeleton of crustaceans (crabs, shrimps, etc.) with a basic aqueous solution. There is an high concentration in the external skeleton of the Arthropods and in the cell wall of some fungi (pathogens).

Both Chitin and Chitosan have some interesting characteristics among which we mention biodegradability, biocompatibility, bioadhesive and non-toxicity.

These and other peculiarities have meant that research was carried out with the aim of studying possible applications of these substances both in agriculture, as a supplement in diets and also in medicine where it is used for its haemostatic properties.

Chitosan is an alternative product used in agriculture without contraindications for plants, it is recommended its use from spring to autumn during the period of greater vegetative development of fruit trees, vegetables, industrial crops, flowers, etc ... and, thanks to its composition, stimulates the natural defenses of plants, highly improving the resistance to fungi and bacteria, has also been shown a substantial increase in production, in addition to a significant decrease in chemical treatments. It is also a natural antibacterial able to fully produce the desired effect.

Distributed on the leaves or by roots, every 3 to 4 weeks, the plant is induced to recognize this substance as a danger and will produce damming structures. The plant will trigger defense mechanisms activated by Chitosan but which will be useful to defend the plant organism from the real pathogens able to attack the plant.

Chitosan , therefore, has no direct action on pathogens (viruses, fungi, bacteria, various parasites ...) but it stimulates the plant to promptly activate forms of defense against the most various infections.

This substance can therefore be used to improve plant health by reducing susceptibility to diseases, integrating and improving the naturally growth of the plant.

It is also used as a stimulator for plants and to facilitate the gemination of seeds. In fact applied on seeds, Chitosano stimulates the growth of healthy and strong shoots, precociously able to protect themeselves from the aggression of pests.

Chitosan is used as a supplement not just for plants, but also for human consumption, in particular it is used as a supplement in low-calories diets for the loss of weight.

This use is based on Chitosan 's ability to bind fat to itself, preventing the accumulating in human adiposes tissues.
