Sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3), also known as Sodium bicarbonate is a derivative of carbonic acid.

At room temperature it appears as a white crystalline powder soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol.

Sodium bicarbonate has been obtained in impure form, for centuries, from ashes of some types of algae and plants and from salt lakes. In aqueous solution, if heated below 100 ° C, it begins to decompose into carbon dioxide and sodium carbonate giving a slight alkaline reaction. It is prepared from sodium carbonate, water and carbon dioxide.It is a very ductile substance that is often used for home or personal hygiene. It is used as a bleach, as a disinfectant, as an antacid and a digestive.As for agriculture, it is a remedy particularly indicated for the treatment of fungal diseases such as mildew, downy mildew and gray mold, diseases that frequently affect fruit and vegetable crops, in many cases succeeding in causing many damage.The Food and Drug Administration has included sodium bicarbonate among the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) substances. It is used as an ingredient for leavening powders, for effervescent salts and for drinks, as it develops carbon dioxide. It is used as an antacid due to its alkaline reaction. Sodium bicarbonate is authorized as a food additive in Europe, identified by the abbreviation E 500.

Mechanism of action

The possible mechanisms of action are not entirely clear but it seems that the bicarbonate salts modify the pH of the leaf surface disfavoring the development of pathogens.

The solution we will use on our plants is the following:

  • Water and Sodium Bicarbonate 1-2 Kg for each 100 liters of water.

Obviously these are standard quantities to be taken as reference values. The minimum dose should be used as a preventive measure while the maximum should be considered in conditions of high infestation and or as a cure. The amount of water to be distributed depends on the number of plants per hectare and their leaf density. Based on these parameters we must consider a water volume of 1000-1500 lt per hectare.

How is the solution prepared?

Pour the baking soda into the water in the barrel and mix until the mixture is homogeneous and transparent. Once the solution has been prepared, one passes directly to the spraying of the crop leaves that we are interested in protecting from fungi.

The enormous advantage of this solution is that we can use it to prevent or stop fungal diseases already in progress, especially in organic farming but also in integrated. The most favorable moment for the use of Sodium Bicarbonate is when periods of high humidity and / or frequent rains occur.

However, sodium bicarbonate has a temporary effect and a low persistence, since it is soluble and completely washable. It must therefore be reused every time it rains, perhaps a few hours before possible precipitation or immediately before. The use of adjuvants with wetting, adhesive action and filming action such as Nu-Film or Base Gold increases its effectiveness and persistence.


This product should only be used on its own.
It is preferable to avoid mixtures with products, but if it's necessary, is good to execute a little test of miscibility before use.
