Cochinellida entomophagous beetle widely used in programs of biological control of citrus fruits, vines and various ornamental plants against the cotonose cochinealis. The adult is an insect about 3 - 4 mm long with dark brown elytres tending to blackish, the rest of the body is brick-colored.
Cryptolaemus montrouzieri is different from the other ladybugs due to the blackish color of the elytra while the rest of the body is lighter with brown-orange coloring. The larvae, also active predators, are covered with white wax arranged in typical irregular flakes and to an untrained eye appear similar to the larvae of cochineal itself.
The adult can live more than two months, and a female in optimal conditions (around 25 ° C) lays up to 120 eggs.
The eggs are laid near prey so that the larvae can easily find food in large quantities. In little more than a month the cycle from egg to adult takes place, passing through the development of 4 larval stages.
The adults or larvae must be distributed as close as possible to the infestation points of the cochineals, so as to have a quick contact with the prey. The capacity of predation is very high and leads to a complete elimination of the plant, which is why the application of Criptolemo is also indicated in the outbreaks of infestation.
Cryptolaemus montrouzieri controlla:
